(Bayfield from Basswood Island)

The lights are out! No, not those, not the aurora borealis (northern lights) that lit up the sky the weekend of May 11-12. That’s what I came looking for in the Apostle Islands aboard the Little Dipper. Unfortunately, on this night, it was another group of lights all together that dominated the skyline.

(Roys Point Marina, cell phone towers, and lakeshore homes/businesses near Red Cliff)

Once, humans lived under a vaulted sky, knew the stars, told stories about them, found their way by the alignment of constellations, wished upon them, and celebrated them. Today, we can hardly see them.
