Islands of Light

Can light be a national treasure?

Thank you for your support of my Little Dipper blog.

As a subscriber, a new essay will come to your inbox on Wednesday. This week, I look at the beauty and importance of light in the islands — the flicker of sunlight reflected into the back of sea caves, the soft beach light on the Cat Island sandspit, the reflections at sunrise on the cliffs of Hermit Island.

We think of water and timber and minerals as “natural resources.” We set areas aside for their historic and wildlife “resources” and even designate “Dark Sky Parks” to celebrate the night sky. Perhaps we need a sanctuary of light, a place celebrated and protected for its intricate, beautiful, and defining light.

I nominate the Apostle Islands.

Enjoy this short video of the light dancing in the waters off of Stockton Island. And tell me your favorite kind of light in nature in the comments.

Thanks again for supporting the Little Dipper. See you in your inbox on Wednesday.
