Sometimes it is just a hunch. I woke in the three a.m. darkness and knew where I wanted to be for sunrise. By 3:30 a.m. I was in the Little Dipper running up the West Channel in the half-light.
It is one of my favorite spots in the Islands - a place with no name on the map but “Quiet Cove” to me. There the shallow water sculpts ripples like fingerprints in the sand below. The landing, guarded by the pines that look down from the cliffs above, is easy and soft, the bow of the boat whispering “shhhh” in the sand.
Anchors set deep, the boat resting in calm water the color of red wine, I lower myself into the water down the ladder, push my way through the dark water to the mouth of the cave at the point, and ease myself into the lip just as it begins to glow orange as if lit from within.
And there it is: sunrise just as I envisioned it as I awoke this morning. Sky swirling with red with wisps of clouds, the sandstone walls gleaming and water the color of molten glass between. Perfect.

Your willingness to leave a comfy bed in the small hours of the morning and go out onto (and into)Lake Superior for these experiences and to share them with the rest of us is impressive! Thank you!
Breathtakingly beautiful
