Dear Subscriber:
At 350 miles long, Lake Superior is so big that it takes the sunrise over a half an hour to cross it, the largest lake in the world by surface area. When winds growl, the waves here can be like crystal mountains, the highest Lake Superior wave ever recorded towered 28.5 feet, the kind of wave that sinks ships and looms in a sailor’s nightmares. But then there are days like this, days when it is more like boating in the sky than in water, when the clouds reflect on its surface like the sky bending down to admire itself in the waters. These mornings in the islands are quiet, silent, as if even a whisper would crack the beauty of the morning like an eggshell. So, I turn off the engine on the Little Dipper and just drift.
