We passed the 300 subscriber mark last week and the lake seems to be celebrating. When I began the “Little Dipper” blog a few months ago, I promised that “this collection of writings and photographs will chronicle the journey aboard the Little Dipper and into the heart of the Apostle Islands … looking for moments of flickering beauty, and seeking a connection to the lake and the islands, a connection woven with the threads of writing, photography, and adventure.” And, I invited you along for the journey.
Since then we have swum into sea caves in the essay “Fear Swims Beside You"
Watched northern lights (in the midst of running over a gill net buoy and scaring a pair of quite confused otters in an essay called “The Agony & The Ecstasy”
Locked eyes with a huge black bear on the Oak Island sandspit in an essay called “In the Presence of Power”
And learned much more about the lingo and science of propeller repair (remember that gill net buoy I hit?) in the essay “From Boom Vangs to Bimini”
We’ve gone out with watercolor artist Dale Whittaker, peace activist John Noltner, boated under the full moon, in the rain, in the fog (oh sorry, that one is coming next week - spoiler alert!), talked about books, lighthouses, hermits, dreams, and frustrations (again, that gill net buoy!).
It has been a great journey. Thank you for coming along for the ride on the Little Dipper and continuing to read as we weave our way through this exploration of discovery, beauty, adventure, sense of place, and the islands (always on the lookout for gill net buoys).
See you again on Wednesday with another essay (and yes, it just might be about fog).
