We had really only gone for what was meant to be a short beach walk, to see what the ice was doing along the shores of Little Sand Bay in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Three hours later, we were still there, caught up in an unfolding drama, a stand-off between a predator and its prey. We couldn’t tear our eyes away.
