A small boat on a big lake and searching for a sense of place. The “Little Dipper” newsletter is about seeking a connection with one place, about sinking down deep in a chosen landscape instead of skipping across the surface of the globe like a tossed stone.

After over two decades of traveling the world as a writer for publications like “National Geographic Traveler” and “Backpacker” and “Reader’s Digest” I came home to Bayfield, Wisconsin and set out to live the truth of the Marcel Proust quote, “The true journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” Join me as we talk about committing to a landscape, seeking a sense of place, and working to see the world around us with “new eyes.”

Once an award-winning travel writer, I now work to find depth and beauty in one chosen landscape: Lake Superior's Apostle Islands, aboard a small boat named the "Little Dipper." Join me on the journey.
