As always Jeff...your writing to me id one of a poet. I so enjoy reading your Blog. Coming home....to me the only place that I have had that feeling is HAWAII. Ad soon as I get off the plane I can smell the flowers. And as soon as I can see the sky it welcomes me with a rainbow...at least it has every time we have been there. We almost called our parents at one point and wanted to tell them to sell everything and send the money. We didn't, obviously but only out of our sense of duty. But man-o-man...we were SO tempted.
Thanks Carol. I am reminded of something my friend Richard K. Nelson said in his wonderful book THE ISLAND WITHIN: "As time went by, I also realized that the particular place I'd chosen was less important than the fact that I'd chosen a place and focused my life around it." Great book if you haven't read it. Thanks for your note and for your support as always -- Jeff
Definitely on the shores of Lake Superior. On Mt. Mesnard in Marquette overlooking Superior, standing on granite is hard to beat. Also being close to the lake & hearing her, a good storm, a night sky are all part of it.
There is a certain light in Michigan. As soon as I enter the state the light changes. I imagine it is the same the sense master painters in France saw.
It is always in the light. I love the way the luminism painters, particularly Martin Johnson Heade in his 1868 painting "Thunderstorm over Narragansett Bay" depicted the light. There is a nostalgic feel to it, a touch of longing for things beyond the obvious, the perfect metaphor for seeking a sense of place. Thanks for your comment and for reading "Little Dipper."
